My vote for courage is my son and daughter-in-law. They had been married a few years, wanted children but could not get pregnant. They did in-vitro fertilization, which worked for them. They had twins, born 10 weeks early - one being 2lbs.4oz., the other 2lbs. 14ozs. They were very bad off, and looked like the picture posted here earlier of the baby in the incubator, except half that size. They were premature, jaundiced, had trouble breathing so were on a respirator. They were hooked to alarms that went off about every 5 minutes when one or the other stopped breathing. The girl had a diaphragmatic hernia and needed surgery. She could not eat by mouth well and was failing to thrive. The boy had RSV, which can be deadly to preemies, but he pulled through. He had asthma until 2 years ago, and had breathing treatments at home all the time. The baby girl had to have a second surgery, when she reached 3 pounds, to place a feeding tube in her stomach so she could be fed by a machine at home. This lasted for 2-1/2 years. She had withdrawal spasms and shakes from morphine given to her after the surgery! She was hospitalized 4 times for esophageal bleeding, as she has such reflux, and still does 6 years later! My son and his wife worked full-time, and drove to Boston every day to see these kids. At one point, they had one in Boston and one in Salem Hosp., so they had to split their nights differently! Amazing, courageous parents. And they never complained! That's the kicker.! I can't wait til the kids are a little bit older so I can tell them just how much their parents wanted them!
