You drive for show but you putt for dough. Ben Hogan
Hitting good drives isn't the most important factor for scoring, but it helps to be on the offense after your first shot. Jack Nicklaus.
Well today the goal was to break 100. That means 99 had to shoot a 59 and me a 40, or me a 39 and 99 a 60. I had a dismal 47 and 99, God Bless her a 69.
We came in at 116.
UJ: 4 5 5 6 6 6 3 7 5
99: 6 10 7 10 6 6 4 10 9
1st: Guy mowing green wouldn't give way. That always disturbs me. Pulled a 6 iron into front RH bunker. 99 hit a tolerable pull into LH rough but
hit her second with a top and was also in bunker. We both got out. I got a 2 putt from 10 feet, 99 also out and then chips from fringe and 2 putts.
2nd. Both of us hit good drives. My second 7 iron hits some casual water and stops about 20 yds short. 99 tops her second shot about 30 yards. I chip
to the green and two putt for a bogie, but 99 worm burns her third into the bunker and takes 7 shots before holing out.
3rd. I hit a decent drive but a little too far left. 99 hits an excellent drive that splits the fairway. My second shot drifts to the right,, hits the
only hard ground and bounces 1 foot from a tree root and branches that impede my swing. 99, I think topped her second shot, and maybe her third but gets down
with a respectable 7. I push it out, 5 yards, hit a lob wedge and thankfully sink a long putt for a 5.
4th: There is a strong wind blowing against us from the elevated tee. I figure I won't go in the creek if I aim left and take about a 7/8 swing.
It's just perfect and lands way left, in the short grass, just short of the creek. 99 tees her ball too low, makes a good swing, but tops it into the
left hand side of the forward tee box. 99 makes a good second shot and is just about where I am with her second. I hit a good solid 5 hybrid that lands
left, short of the second creek. 99 fades to the right, and we part company. I hit a decent 6 iron but it lands short, I chip up and two putt. I dunno
what happened to 99, but she took seven more to get in from about 200.
5th. Snap hook and lose a ball in the LH woods, on the easiest par four. 99 doesn't catch a break either. Her slight push winds up in one of the only
three mounds in the fairway. I hit an 8 iron that lands on the front fringe, chip to 6 feet and one putt. She makes a six from there and we are glad to put
the hole behind us.
6th. I hit first from the white tees. 99 says "Good Shot" before we see the ball duck hook into the 8th fairway. 99 tees the ball up, and hits
a very solid tee shot into the fairway. My second hits a tree branch, and drops dead, 130 from the green. 99 hits a respectable 5 hybrid just right off the
stone outcropping. My next shot goes way right, lands twenty feet short of the green. 99 hits her best approach and lands on the front fringe. She skulls
the next one 30 feet beyond the pin but makes her best putt of the day to one foot and taps in. Guess I chipped up and two putts.
7th: I tee up a beater ball, and am pin high about 30 feet left. 99 hits a low 7 iron that lands on green but rolls to back fringe. I roll up to two feet and sink it for my only par of the day. 99 hits respectable chip and has a four footer for par, but doesn't allow for break and missed her par. IT NEVER HAD A CHANCE.
8th: I hit another snap hook. 99 borrows my Nike Sumo and hits a weak push but not too bad. My 4 hybrid is a good shot and gets me about another 160.
99 starts chopping away and away. I hit the straightest PW of the year, but wound up 10 yards short. Really steaming. I guess fatigue set in cause 99
took her 3rd 10 here. WE'VE GOT TO CURE THIS, 99.
9th. I wheelhouse another hook. 99 hits an excellent drive to the 150 marker. Her second best tee shot that I've ever seen. I hit a good six iron,
but its a little short. 99 decides to have fun in the woods and squanders the good tee shot. We reel in with a five and a nine, and thank God it's
over.
WE ARE GONNA BREAK 100 BEFORE THE YEAR IS OUT, 99. COUNT ON IT. BUT YOU REALLY NEED TO WORK ON THAT CHIPPING. HANDS 6" IN FRONT OF BALL, WRIST'S
LOCKED, AND LET YOUR BODY TURN DETERMINE THE DISTANCE.
