Why is it that we can dish out billions to the money mongers; billions to other countries; billions for a war; but we cant provide health insurance for our own
citizens?

If we stopped dishing it out to all those other things that in no way benefit us we could provide insurance for every single citizen,
and probably darned good insurance at that!

This is an incredibly important subject - we need a massive change in our thinking about priorities. What is most important, right now? This country is falling
apart in many ways. China will soon become the dominant superpower. Banks are getting away with murder and have their own rules. Same with insurance companies.
Our infrastructure is falling apart. We need equitable and sane health insurance for everyone. Our two party system is a shambles. Congress is a cesspool of
vested interests that can barely wipe its own ass. We are spending $600 BILLION/year for useless wars that benefit the defense industry and do little else to
benefit us. We have over 800 military installations worldwide. Our prison population is booming and is the largest in the world per capita...
Oh yeah - we're free and live in the greatest country in the world. Too bad we're in such a world of hurt. Health insurance should be guaranteed for everyone but the way things are going that will never happen. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. - Dave Barry |

While I love Gloucester, and all of its short-comings enough that I would defend this town with my very life, I feel that I can no longer say the same for the rest of this country. More and more, I look at the model of Canada and I see a country that really cares about its people, more then America anyway. I had, and still do have great hopes for President Barack Obama, that he may be able to re-instill some sense of pride in our nation, but it's just not happening. And to the republicans on this board: don't try to "dis" the man or read anything into my sentiment because I initially lost my belief and faith in this country under a republican administration, and there was obviously none of that ilk on the horizon that was going to do anything other then "Business as Usual". How do you stop a war? General William Tecumseh Sherman was right: "War is cruelty. There's no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over". There is no bomb that can drop on a house and eliminate only the combatants in that house. Look, if our politicians are ready to unleash the most powerful military the world has known on our enemies, then let them at it - 100%! Pound the crap out of them then back out and let their meek pick up the pieces. "Oh, but we'll piss off the other countries like China and Russia". No, sorry, we'll SCARE THE LIVING HELL OUT OF THEM! I think that our own people will then understand how important it is to be VERY selective of who we choose as our leaders and who we elect to control our strength. It will re-instill our pride and that pride will trickle down into every aspect of our nation. It will boost our economy and put this country back to work, and maybe, then we won't have to worry about a government mandated health care system because the general public will be able to afford their own insurance. But what do I know?

GoO, you don't get it. What we've got right now IS Viet Nam all over again, on TWO FRONTS! And the ONLY way to come out of it is in disgrace, yet
again. Our military is, and was then too, the best fighting force in the world. They're just not being utilized properly. Our military men and women are
solders, not police officers, and our politicians are neither. They should NOT be directing a war from behind a desk in Washington. In Fact, THEY should not
be directing a war at all! They have determined that their abilities in diplomacy can not achieve the desired result and have made the decision to utilize the

The US hasn't "come marching home" since the end of WW II. We still kept large numbers of troops in Europe and Japan but it was peaceful. Our
troops didn't have to stay on base or go out armed. Can anyone see peaceful post war occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan looking like post WW II Europe and
Japan?
Do we go all out with a draft and bombing and level two countries because they........? So we can feel good? The money spent on war material and more troops does what? More mercenaries? Getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan will have to involve a full investigation of those that got us into it including punishment of ALL those involved. It will involve dealing with our military's leaders who want to play General MacArthur by civilian Constitutional authority. It will involve the demobilization of troops to a poor economy and NOT letting cheap politicians tell them that they lost and that they were spit on. Anyone want to be the President here?

PoCA's ridiculous when they "come marching home" victorious statement warrants a different discussion.
But one thing is quite obvious - as long as wars and defense budgets use up almost as much as the entire social services budget, there will never be health
insurance for all Americans. Why? Because we will have to sell even more Treasury notes to China to finance healthcare reform and will dig our own graves in
the process. We're already screwed economically and there are few jobs available, yet we're told there is a growing economic recovery. When will there
be light at the end of the tunnel? Not in our or our childrens' lifetimes.
