One of the saddest things there is.

An old soldier, indeed. And, to think it could have been reborn with glory if project had not been guillotined by those with other, personal, vested interests.
This obstruction is the real tragedy.

and the ironic part is those people with their other personal, vested interests are going to all give a collective "The Paint Factory can't be torn
down" cry when it needs to be, and by looking at that picture, it may be sooner than later...

nice place for some condo's, my question is Y NOT DEVELOP that area. Get the HAZMAT people in there to clean it up and develop the land. What a waste.

The market isn't exactly in the best shape for more condos in Gloucester, even at such a choice location.

What ever happened to the person that planned to convert it to a single family home and promised to keep/restore its exterior appearance to the icon we've all come to love? |

If architectural plans for a stunning renovation in the form of a single home were scuttled, do you think plans for condos would make it through the barbed
wire?

Maybe new strength in the economy from a new White House will provide the group which can make it happen. Congrats to Marcia Hart whose detailed research and
concentrated effort has shed so much light on all the elements of a workable project.

the condo's were my idea, it could be a condo complex, single family, multifamily, mansion, etc. whatever, just don't let that piece of land rot,
someone with $$$$$ would love to put a nice house there. It also could be a commercial spot, restaurant where boats can tie up and go in for a few drinks and
some good grub.
What do you propose Oak?

What ever happened to the person that planned to convert it to a single family home and promised to keep/restore its exterior appearance to the icon we've all come to love?Another old soldier who faded away...and who can blame after years of waiting for approval to carry on... The architect's model of what could have been was awesome - and dedicated to keeping the exterior as close as possible to the original. |

Agreed IA. That seems to be how the story may end. The numerous proposals to responsibly develop he property have been met with opposition.

Thanks Real...
Sad sad sad. How cool would it have been to have that place all restored and some nice, worthy, wealthy folks living in it. But alas, the "Friends of the Paint Factory" doomed their beloved friend to a future of blight and decay. Hey... What are friends for? |

Paint Factory and the lot next to the GloHo are the biggest wastes of prime realestate in the city IMO.

Answer to Par Putt's question "What do you propose, oak?" I liked the leadership provided by the most recent abuttor, who brought Yale University
into the equation. ( It could be any other multifaceted University, with Arts and Sciences, including UMass, UNH, Cornell, MIT, Wellesley, all which attract
huge public and private funding The last proposal I saw, presented over at the Marina, in E. Gloucester, last year, was the best mix. Some housing, some
academic elements, including art and our significant local art history, and industry, could attract the Big Bucks needed to it "right," from various
federal and state funds, as well as non-profits. Demolition is a complete "no-no" in my book, always has been. The place reeks with history, copper
paint having helped win the Civil War, allowing the North's warships to go faster, in crucial Civil War naval battles in the 1860's, because the copper
in the paint prevented the growth of algae on hulls. Many famous artists have painted on site, or Of the site. Fitz Hugh Lane, Edward Hopper.among them I like
best a mix of academic, office, maybe even some warehouse storage, residential spaces, access by water, whenever weather allows. I also see a need for some
Inner Harbor scientific study, ie in sea water tanks, run by the tides. Maybe some fish reproduction, like what used to be on Ten Pound Island, a fish
hatchery. Perfect place for tidal energy research. The key GO-YES factors are low neighborhood impact, remote transportation in and out, no net loss in
n'hood parking, which is critical in summer. Trans by van, or on foot, or other, and quiet activities which attract mega funding. I miss my freind,Judy
Chamberlain, (RIP) who along with her sister were the only residents with lifelong legal rights to go onto the property, left to them in provisos, in their
grandfather Wonson's will. He was the Wonson, in "Tarr and Wonson." I'd also like to see funding acquired for the improvement of Horton St.
sinking further into the Harbor, every month. And the re-building of the rail fence along Horton St. once painted white, which denoted public access to the
site, and also access for mariners to fresh drinking water. ( They could see the rail fence from their vessels. )The rail was a 4'X4' tilted on its
axis, and dropped into iron posts, with "Y" joints on the top of them. It's just about gone on Horton St. It's all over Cape Ann but is being
lost as the years go by.

I hate to say this, but by the looks of the building, now, it may need demolition... It may have gone too far, and there may be no way to save it...
A Great Big Thanks to the obstructionists!! |
