Been doing some reading about Osprey runts - I hope everyone (who cares) realizes that the survival and fledging of Little Guy (#4 hatchling) was close to a
miracle. Highly unusual that the pecking order doesn't do away with the runt - either by starvation or outright homicide, usually by #3 chicklet.
What is even more amazing to me is the way Mama protected Little Guy and made certain he received his share of food - granted, the abundance of available fish had much to do with the positive outcome, in that LG was fed after the first three were satiated. Still...the literature states that the mother pays strict attention to birth order and 99.9% of time, no heed to the runt. Survival of the fittest in its essence.

Aww Mama Realist...your heart strings must be pulling a bit to see them go. Was fun and amazing to watch. Go you!

Thanks for understanding, mag. Don't mind admitting to having shed a tear or two...or three...or four. Empty nest syndrome...

I have to believe there was something special about Harriet and Ospie, Realist. They were both so attentive and such amazing caretakers. It's true that the
plentiful food supply was probably the prime factor, but still.......(according to someone I talked to at the center, all of the nesting birds did especially
well this year because of that.) I wish I'd been able to get down there to actually see them, but it just didn't work out. Next year!
Yes, Little Guy was indeed a miracle. Perhaps a harbinger of hope to show us all that nature can be sustaining against all odds. After all, even that there were 4 eggs that hatched was something! I'm going to miss them a great deal (sniff) and will spend the winter wondering where they are and how they're doing. We'll never really know, but they've made a mark on so many of us and that's no small miracle either. Must have been meant to be. |

I think I'm going to send a donation to the Center in honor of the six of them and in appreciation of their efforts to provide such a wonderful experience.

Yes, me too. Envelope addressed. And, also thank the Center's Marketing Director again for her personal responses regarding Squatter's
"supposed" talon problem.
HAVE A SAFE FLIGHT
