How much will that gaffe hurt him? Probably not too much overall, but in the PA primary, who knows. Could be a factor.
And just now he did one of the most impressive dances yet with: "I said what EVERYONE knows is true....." and commented on the "bitterness" as the culprit. When working class people get bitter, they
"vote on guns" or get so worried about "illegal immigrants", etc. etc. What a colossal switch and spin---and stereotyping?! Damn, he's
good!

This is both humorous and probably quite on the mark. Can't we PLEASE have him at least keep this stuff under wraps until after the GE?????? Guess not.

kausfiles: A mostly political Weblog. Obama's "Cling" Gaffe Help! He's saying what he thinks about downscale whites again! By Mickey Kaus Updated Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 1:20 AM ET Ann Coulter is reading Obama's autobiography and comes up with a not-implausible interpretation of the famous Racist Grandma incident: As recounted in Obama's autobiography, the only evidence that his grandmother feared black men comes from Obama's good-for-nothing, chronically unemployed white grandfather, who accuses Grandma of racism as his third excuse not to get dressed and drive her to work. 10:17 P.M. ___________________________ Cling Along with Barack: The always-suspect Michael Lind nevertheless sends around a useful commentary on Obama's gruesomely off-key condscension toward downscale Rustbelt voters: According to Obama, working class (white) people "cling to guns" because they are bitter at losing their manufacturing jobs. Excuse me? Hunting is part of working-class American culture. Does Obama really think that working-class whites in Pennsylvania were gun control liberals until their industries were downsized, whereas they all rushed to join the NRA ... "I used to think working class voters had conservative values because they were bitter about their economic circumstances--welfare and immigrants were "scapegoats," part of the false consciousness that would disappear when everyone was guaranteed a good job at good wages. Then I left college. ..." P.S.: Because Obama's comments are clearly a Category II Kinsley Gaffe--in which the candidate accidentally says what he really thinks--it will be hard for Obama to explain away. [He could say he was tired and it was late at night?--ed But he was similarly condescending in his big, heartfelt, well-prepared "race speech" when he explained white anger over welfare and affirmative action as a displacement of the bitterness that comes when whites are anxious about their futures, and feel their dreams slipping away; in an era of stagnant wages and global competition ... Obama's new restatement confirms the Marxist Deskwork interpretation of the race speech, removing any honest doubt as to his actual attitude. Rather than trying to spin his way out, wouldn't it be better for Obama to forthrightly admit his identity? Let's have a national dialogue about egghead condescension!] P.P.S.: Note that guns are not the only thing Obama says "white working class" people "cling" to for economic reasons: [I]t's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations. [E.A.] Hmm. Isn't Obama the one who has been clinging to religion lately? Does he cling to his religion for authentic reasons while those poor Pennsylvania slobs cling to it as a way to "explain their frustrations"? ... They worship an awesome God in the blue states because they're bitter about stagnant wages! I think that's what he said in his 2004 convention address ... 4:41 P.M. link |

If I were a democrat...I would be getting darn tired of the way Obama "speaks down" to the masses. His higher than mighty attitude will lose it for
him in the GE. Voters hate smarmy politicians and the more he speaks the slicker he sounds.

Sadly, Global there are plenty of Dems who feel exactly that way. Sheesh. I'm afraid he didn't make it any better last night either, especially with
that silly Annie Oakley shot (ahem) at Clinton. If there's anything worse than slick, it's slick and smartassy. LOL
But there's hope. McCain isn't exactly known for his lack of bloopers either. And that temper carries a big risk, too. |

This latest "gaffe" is just one more example of what we really "don't" know about Obama, and what he REALLY thinks of America(ns).
(Who's next? "Fat" people? Stay-at-home Moms? The disabled? The "Live Free or Die" folks in New Hampshire, etc., etc.??) He talks a
good game of inclusiveness everywhere he goes, but where does he really stand and what does he really think? I stand by my thought that he is currently too
inexperienced (read that clueless) to be effective.
Clinton has been around long enough for us to have a pretty good idea when she's selling us the goods, and for us to know her strengths and weaknesses. The same can not be said for Obama, and we're running out of time to find out. Lord help us if we find out after he's in the White House. |

Thought you might appreciate the analysis Miss D! April 15, 2008 A Living LieBy Thomas SowellAn e-mail from a reader said that, while Hillary Clinton tells lies, Barack Obama is himself a lie. That is becoming painfully apparent with each new revelation of how drastically his carefully crafted image this election year contrasts with what he has actually been saying and doing for many years. Senator Obama's election year image is that of a man who can bring the country together, overcoming differences of party or race, as well as solving our international problems by talking with Iran and other countries with which we are at odds, and performing other miscellaneous miracles as needed. There is, of course, not a speck of evidence that Obama has ever transcended party differences in the United States Senate. Voting records analyzed by the National Journal show him to be the farthest left of anyone in the Senate. Nor has he sponsored any significant bipartisan legislation -- nor any other significant legislation, for that matter. Senator Obama is all talk -- glib talk, exciting talk, confident talk, but still just talk. Some of his recent talk in San Francisco has stirred up controversy because it revealed yet another blatant contradiction between Barack Obama's public image and his reality. Speaking privately to supporters in heavily left-liberal San Francisco, Obama let down his hair and described working class people in Pennsylvania as so "bitter" that they "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them." Like so much that Obama has said and done over the years, this is standard stuff on the far left, where guns and religion are regarded as signs of psychological dysfunction -- and where opinions different from those of the left are ascribed to emotions ("bitter" in this case), rather than to arguments that need to be answered. Like so many others on the left, Obama rejects "stereotypes" when they are stereotypes he doesn't like but blithely throws around his own stereotypes about "a typical white person" or "bitter" gun-toting, religious and racist working class people. In politics, the clearer a statement is, the more certain it is to be followed by a "clarification," when people react adversely to what was plainly said. Obama and his supporters were still busy "clarifying" Jeremiah Wright's very plain statements when it suddenly became necessary to "clarify" Senator Obama's own statements in San Francisco. People who have been cheering whistle-blowers for years have suddenly denounced the person who blew the whistle on what Obama said in private that is so contradictory to what he has been saying in public. However inconsistent Obama's words, his behavior has been remarkably consistent over the years. He has sought out and joined with the radical, anti-Western left, whether Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers of the terrorist Weatherman underground or pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli Rashid Khalidi. Obama is also part of a long tradition on the left of being for the working class in the abstract, or as people potentially useful for the purposes of the left, but having disdain or contempt for them as human beings. Karl Marx said, "The working class is revolutionary or it is nothing." In other words, they mattered only in so far as they were willing to carry out the Marxist agenda. Fabian socialist George Bernard Shaw included the working class among the "detestable" people who "have no right to live." He added: "I should despair if I did not know that they will all die presently, and that there is no need on earth why they should be replaced by people like themselves." Similar statements on the left go back as far as Rousseau in the 18th century and come forward into our own times. It is understandable that young people are so strongly attracted to Obama. Youth is another name for inexperience -- and experience is what is most needed when dealing with skillful and charismatic demagogues. Those of us old enough to have seen the type again and again over the years can no longer find them exciting. Instead, they are as tedious as they are dangerous. |

Don't be surprised if Bruce Springsteen songs start opening and closing Barack Obama's campaign rallies.
The Boss is endorsing Obama for president, telling fans on his website, "I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest." The legendary rocker, who has generally supported liberal Democrats and who objected to then-President Ronald Reagan using his "Born in the USA," says that Obama "speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years." The Illinois senator, Springsteen says, is the best candidate to "lead us into the 21st century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans." |

All I can say is that some of us have "seen" Obama for what he is pretty much from the get-go of his actual campaign. If he's elected, I'd
like to say I'll love saying "I told you so," but he's far too scary for me to take any delight in what will follow.
This is oh so definitely a case of "be careful what you wish for ..." |

Obama first announced he would seek the Presidency to a small group of supporters. This meeting was held in the home of Bill Ayers.
That name should ring a bell. Together with Bernardine Dohrn, Bill Ayers made home-made bombs and attempted to blow up the Pentagon! So, Obama is friends with traitorous terrorists, and also associates himself with a "religious" leader who preaches all the worlds problems are because of Jews and White Devils. How is this guy even still in the race? |

MissDimples |

He's still in the race because the media gave him a free pass. They didn't investigate, they didn't report.

The Boss endorsed Obama......oh well! Now that MUST mean he's the one I should vote for! This race is just too hilarious. If only it weren't such a
disaster for those who need real change.
I do think the honeymoon is finally over, 99, but it may be too late. I sense we're going to see major loads of buyer regret on this one down the road. Honest to gawd, the fervor and blindness to rational constructive criticism among Obama followers rivals the Bush lemmings. In fact, there are pretty frightening parallels. The old "if you don't support the war, you ain't a patriotic American" has shifted in content (but not in character) to "if you're not for Obama, you're not for change and hope". Whatta world. |

fenian, I'm a big fan of Reich and wanted him to succeed. However, his view of Obama as not a politics as usual candidate just boggles the
mind----especially from someone so worthy of respect. I wish he'd get specific on why he believes that because all the evidence points elsewhere on that
one. How is someone like Reich so sucked in is a question that really stumps me. (Or maybe not. It's probably testimony to just how good Obama is at
sucking folks in.)
