The eight-week old stars of our show sit at opposite ends of
the nest, facing out, looking like they’re ready to launch their coal black
bodies into the troposphere, ignoring the fact that they haven’t done the prep
work needed to give them functioning wings for flight. (Minor detail to a
Reality reminds us that these two aren’t ready to flee the
nest and they are most likely just wondering where their parents are with
brunch. I haven’t caught them at feeding time lately but seeing them work over
a tidbit of a fish tail yesterday, with no help from Momma, I’m guessing that, these days, Papa drops off the daily fish while Momma stands by and encourages the duo to
peck away and feed themselves.
The DCEagleCam FAQ section tells us that 8 weeks is when
wing strengthening begins for budding eagles, so much flapping and stretching
should be the main sight in the aerie in the coming days, rather than the
eating, preening and sleeping routine of the past 2 months.
The countdown to independence has begun.
