What a bloody crime - beautiful, natural area. More trees felled - and to what end? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

What, you thought they were going to fit the mall into the natural landscape?

That's a great idea and a great service to the town. Succeed or fail, the documentation in pictures and words will be a valuable history lesson. THANKS!

Realist - you should have purchased the land to keep it that way. |

Thanks, Squig, for providing us with the up close and personal view of this journey. Where it will end, a decade down the pike, is anyone's guess...

A slide show from an earlier time might be interesting for everyone to see.
These photos were all taken long after Sam Park removed tons and tons of old washing machines, dryers, television sets, abandoned vehicles, burnt out cars, yard waste, full garbage bags, and a million or so broken beer and vodka bottles. This property had become an "unofficial dump" of Cape Ann…..a dangerous, trash filled place, and a repeated scene of crime involving young people who drank, drugged and fought on the property. Now, someone wants to do something positive with this property, and it is suddenly Yellowstone National Park. Nobody showed any interest in this property until Park invested in it. Now we're quoting old Joan Mitchell songs in sad remembrance. Silly stuff. |

I appreciate the slideshow, but do find this post pretty damn funny. I think the far greater crime is putting our families safety at risk by not having enough money to man fire stations. I think a far greater crime is letting the beautiful architecture on City Hall crumble down because there are not enough tax dollars to maintain it and the further into disrepair it goes, the more work would be needed to bring it back and restore it.
I think a far greater crime is that we have to lay off teachers and rob our children of learning opportunities because the schools are so strapped for cash. Cash that could have been generated from Jeffery Cohen's project, or Doug Lemly's project. I think a far greater crime is the state of our roads. Roads that could be paid for with responsible growth which I consider the Sam Parks project to be. I think a far greater shame is the folks that stymied the Paint Factory project that would have saved the facade for all to see and created a whole lot more taxes on that property but instead we watch it deteriorate and will lose it forever.
I think the 200 or so jobs created would be welcomed by inner city folks who could walk to work and not have to worry about gas prices. I think people would welcome a place where they could by certain goods without having to drive up the mall. But what do I know? I'm just a dumb lobster dealer with an economics and finance degree. Break out the saran wrap we can wrap everything up and preserve it forever.

I sometimes think that people obstruct for the mere pleasure of obstructing.
Talk about cutting off noses despite the face. As we watch Gloucester crumble around us. |

I'm curious to know how many of those here on this board who post against this (and other) projects are transplants vs long-time residents/natives.

IMO Capt Joe is right on the money. The reason that Gloucester has gotten this bad in the first place is because of the unwillingness to let NEW business come
to town. This goes way back to when the "family owned" market cried about letting in Market Basket, etc.
That "family owned" market ended up being sold to Shaws and then there were two! How come? We need to generate more revenue and the way to do it is to bring business to town not drive them away! You can't keep picking the pockets of the Gloucester home owners...get the money from someone who is willing to invest in Gloucester!

DM3194 your comment is somewhat off. The people living in that area DID and DO care about that woods and do the best they can to take care of it.
I grew up playing in those woods and never once ran into a washer/dryer/car/ etc.
