Dear Looking for Work:

Please know that I respond with good intentions. Unfortunately, you need to know that bringing children to any work place (besides a day care operation) is inappropriate.

It's disruptive to business, and inconsiderate to co-workers. Your employer is paying for your time on the job (not distracted by children), and customers are paying for your undivided attention. This is true, no matter what kind of career you pursue.

That said, I think that the other responders have a great idea about collaborating on babysitting duties to allow you all time to work. It may not be your preferred approach, but it's really your only alternative if you want to work outside of your home.

Otherwise, perhaps you could consider medical or other transcription services. There are also sales/marketing services that allow you to work from your home computer/phone. Many provide free training.

Alternatively, you can offer secretarial or errand services from your home via an ad. That seems to be a big hit these days (growing industry) because it's a big cost savings for companies. The down-side to being entrapreneurial in this way is that you won't have benefits (i.e. health care) because you're likely to work as an Independent Contractor, which means that you pay your own taxes at the end of the year (I-9 form).

Another idea for working from home would be to buy/sell items on eBay or Craig's List. Just be sure to narrow your focus to 1-2 things that you really LOVE dealing in, because you'll be up to your ears in them. Also, be sure it's something that's in demand and start small until you learn the ins/outs of this business. Also, learn everything that you can about it before you get started There are tons of great books and free articles on the web on this subject.

Lastly, consider pursuing job training or certificate of some kind, so that you can compete. It's especially important for you to improve your computer skills. You'll need them on every job these days. If you can prove financial need, there are LOTS of opportunities out there for you. The Mass Dept. of Unemployment Services can help, as can your local, community college. As long as you have a high school diploma or GED, you can take college courses at a Community College or on-line if that's more convenient.

Warning: Avoid all companies located outside of the US. Do NOT send/wire anyone any money (to start a business, handle initial costs, train, etc.). They're ALL scams and they'll steal your money.

Good luck with your job and career search. It's a tough economy right now and it's really important to be as creative as possible to make ends meet. Your letter here is a very good start, actually!! You may need to have several balls in the air. But, with determination, you'll find a niche for yourself that allows you the balance between work and family that you desire. Keep forging ahead and don't give up!
